Vivian Balakrishnan children-Singaporean politician and diplomat, Vivian Balakrishnan was born on January 25th, 1961 in Singapore.
Prior to receiving the President’s Scholarship in 1980 to study medicine at the Yong Loo Lin Faculty of Medicine at the National University of Singapore, he completed his education at Anglo-Chinese School and National Junior College.
He held both the position of chairman of the union council and the presidency of the NUS Student Union for two terms.
In 1991, Balakrishnan decided to pursue an ophthalmology postgraduate specialty and joined the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh as a fellow.
Vivian Balakrishnan career
Since 2015, Balakrishnan has been Singapore’s minister of foreign affairs. He is a politician, diplomat, and former ophthalmologist.
He is a member of the ruling People’s Action Party (PAP) and has served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Holland-Bukit Timah GRC’s Cashew division since 2006. Before to that, he served in Holland-Bukit Panjang GRC’s Ulu Pandan division from 2001 to 2006.
He previously served as Second Minister for Trade and Industry between 2005 and 2006, Minister for Community, Youth, and Sports between 2005 and 2011, Second Minister for Information, Communications, and the Arts between 2006 and 2008.
Balakrishnan also served as Minister for the Environment and Water Resources between 2011 and 2015, and Minister-in-charge of the Smart Nation Initiative between 2014 and 2017.
Prior to being accepted as a member of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, President’s Scholar Balakrishnan completed postgraduate specialised training in ophthalmology at the National University of Singapore’s Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine.
He held the roles of medical director of the Singapore National Eye Centre and chief executive officer of the Singapore General Hospital concurrently while serving as the commanding officer of the Second Combat Support Hospital of the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) from 1999 to 2002.
As a member of a five-person PAP team running in the Holland-Bukit Panjang GRC in the 2001 general election, Balakrishnan made his political debut. He won by an unopposed walkover.
Following that, he was named Senior Minister of State for Trade and Industry in 2004 and Minister of State for National Development in 2002.
